My boat tour around the Ang Thong Archipelago

The Ang Thong Archipelago, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is a true natural paradise that deserves to be explored. Made up of 42 islands covering more than 250 square kilometers, this archipelago is a marine national park that offers breathtaking scenery, secluded beaches, secret lagoons , and hiking trails. During my last stay in Thailand, I had the chance to take a boat trip around this magical archipelago. This is my unforgettable experience!

Preparing for the excursion

Choosing the right boat tour

The Ang Thong Archipelago is accessible from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. For my part, I chose a boat trip that left from Koh Samui. There are many companies that offer guided tours around the islands, but it is important to choose a tour that offers good value for money and respects the natural environment of the area.

The boat ride

The tour started early in the morning, with a speedboat transfer from the port of Koh Samui. The boat ride took about 1h30, and we were lucky enough to be able to enjoy the calm sea and fresh air. The weather was beautiful, with clear blue skies and a light breeze that made the crossing even more enjoyable.

Discovering the islands

1. Mae Ko Island and its turquoise lagoon

One of the highlights of the tour was our stop at Mae Ko Island, home to the famous Blue Lagoon. After docking on the island, we took a short hike to the top to get a stunning panoramic view of the lagoon, surrounded by cliffs and dense vegetation. The contrast between the green of the mountains and the crystalline blue of the water was simply spectacular.

Once at the top, I had the chance to dive into the tranquil waters of the lagoon and let myself be carried away by its beauty. It was a magical moment, away from the tourist hustle and bustle.

2. Wua Talap Island and its hiking trails

Wua Talap Island is the largest island in the archipelago and offers stunning views of the other islands. We took a hiking trail that leads to the viewpoint, about 500 meters above sea level. The climb was a bit difficult, but the reward at the top was worth every step. From there, one could see the entire archipelago and its surrounding islands, a deep blue sea that stretched as far as the eye could see.

3. Snorkeling around the islands

One of the must-do activities on this tour was snorkeling. We had the chance to dive in the crystal clear waters around the island of Koh Yippon, where we observed incredible marine life. Colorful tropical fish, vibrant corals , and even sea turtles were visible underwater. The dive spots were perfect for beginners and experienced divers alike, with exceptional underwater visibility.

4. Ao Thong Nai Pan Beach

One of the most relaxing moments of the excursion was our stop at one of the wild beaches of the archipelago. The island of Koh Wua Talap is home to one of the most unspoiled and tranquil beaches in the region, Ao Thong Nai Pan. It was the perfect place to relax, soak up the sun, and swim in incredibly transparent water. The beaches of the Ang Thong archipelago are undeveloped, which gives them a special charm.

Why the Ang Thong Archipelago is a must-see

An unspoiled natural paradise

The Ang Thong archipelago is a true natural sanctuary. As a national park, it enjoys strict protection, which helps to preserve its biodiversity and pristine landscapes. The islands are inhabited by exceptional flora and fauna, and snorkeling or hiking are perfect ways to connect with nature.

An experience off the beaten track

If you’re looking for a trip outside of the traditional sightseeing circuits, the Ang Thong Archipelago is the place to be. Although it is relatively popular, the size of the islands and the seclusion of the beaches make it feel like a private paradise.

Activities for all tastes

Whether you’re passionate about hiking, diving, or simply looking for relaxation on idyllic beaches, the Ang Thong Archipelago offers a variety of activities for all tastes. It’s a perfect destination for a day trip, but also for extended stays if you’re looking to explore each island.

My boat trip around the Ang Thong Archipelago was one of the highlights of my time in Thailand. The beauty of these islands, the diversity of its landscapes and the tranquility of its beaches make it a destination not to be missed. If you’re lucky enough to visit Koh Samui or Koh Phangan, make sure to set aside a day to discover the Ang Thong Archipelago. An unforgettable experience, which will leave you with lasting memories of wild Thailand.
